The Growing Futures Kenya (GFK) Project is an initiative by Farm Africa which aims to empower
young farmers in the western region of Kenya by enhancing their agricultural practices and
market access. The project focuses on training these farmers in Good Agricultural Practices
(GAP) and linking them to both domestic and international markets for high-demand vegetables.
This project is funded by Aldi UK with over £260,000 and has continued to receive support to
expand its reach and impact.
Implementation Status
The GFK Project started in the year 2016 and is currently ongoing. It mainly operates in Trans-
Nzoia County in Western Kenya. Through partnerships with Aldi UK, the project has provided
resources such as solar irrigation pumps and training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). As
of the latest reports, over 4,000 young farmers have benefited from the program, gaining skills
and understanding of the vegetable value chain and establishing export markets for the produce.
Key Findings
- Increased agricultural productivity: Over 4,000 farmers involved in the project have
reported higher yields and improved quality of produce due to the adoption of good and
sustainable agricultural practices. - Enhanced market access: The project has successfully linked farmers to international
markets, enabling them to sell their produce at competitive prices, thereby increasing their
incomes.
The GFK Project faces challenges such as ensuring the sustainability of international market
linkages and scaling up the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) among a broader group
of farmers.
