The National Horticulture Traceability System (NHTS) is a digital platform created by the
Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) under the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA). Its purpose
is to improve transparency, accountability, and compliance for Kenya’s horticultural exports in line
with international market standards. The system is designed for fresh produce exporters, farmers,
packhouses, and regulatory bodies, ensuring that all horticultural products can be traced from the
farm to the market.

NHTS was developed in response to the growing global demand for traceability in fresh produce
supply chains, especially from markets like the European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK), and
the Middle East, which enforce strict food safety and phytosanitary regulations. The system aims
to decrease instances of product rejection, boost market confidence, and encourage fair trade
within the horticulture industry.
